The 2004 RFK Book Award was announced on May 24th, 2005. The first-prize award winners are: Perilous Times: Free Speech in Wartime from The Sedition Act of 1798 to The War on Terrorism, by Geoffrey Stone and We Are All The Same : A Story of a Boy's Courage and a Mother's Love, by Jim Wooten. John Seigenthaler, Sr., one of this year’s judges, shared why these books were chosen for the prestigious award:
It was the unanimous opinion of the judges that Perilous Times and We Are All the Same reflect in a powerful and meaningful way, themes that Robert Kennedy would have embraced. Geoffrey Stone reminds us that the struggle for protection of civil liberties is an enduring national challenge. Jim Wooten reminds us that the struggle to address the deadly aids virus that strikes down even the very young is an enduring international challenge. We thank and congratulate them both. “All great questions must be raised by great voices, and the greatest voice is the voice of the people – speaking out – in prose, or painting or poetry or music; speaking out – in homes and halls, streets and farms, courts and cafes – let that voice speak and the stillness you hear will be the gratitude of mankind.” – Robert F. Kennedy
