Published in 1789, The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne is a compilation of the letters Gilbert White wrote to two fellow naturalists describing nature in the countryside near his home. Considered a classic of nature writing, the letters, written over a period of eighteen years, also present a portrait of rural life in the eighteenth century, while securing White's place as a "pioneer" in his "appreciation of the inter-dependence of animals and plants." Today, visitors can easily follow in Gilbert White's footsteps by visiting his home, The Wakes, and walking its twenty acres of garden and parkland. "The rooms have been restored following descriptions in White's own correspondence" and "the garden is well documented by White and has been largely restored to its 18th century form." Also on site is The Oates Museum focusing on the lives and adventures of the explorers Captain Lawrence Oates and his uncle Frank Oates, a Field Studies Centre located in a restored 16th century barn, and a tea parlour and shop.
Visitors can also make the pilgrimage to St. Mary's churchyard where a simple tombstone marks Gilbert White's grave.
